12 tips for a more sustainable salon from Twelve Hair Design

We love hearing about what our Sustainable Salons are doing to continue reducing their impact on the environment. Here’s what Laraine Rose at Twelve Hair Design has implemented in her salon.

  1. Swapped to led lighting – Swapping to LED lighting reducing the use of unnecessary energy and can be up to 80% more efficient than other incandescent bulbs.
  2. Using an eco-head shower head – Eco Heads reduce water waste without compromising efficiency. Despite reducing water usage, the same pressure is maintained due to controlled flow rates. Laraine has found the Eco Head to be an ideal sustainable tool to reduce your water usage and reduce energy bills in turn.

  3. Laraine has made great use of our ‘mirror talkers’ which have eco-tips that spark conversations between stylists and clients about sustainable haircare. Laraine chose the clear-backed ones, but other designs are available. You can download them for free here. See a short video on how other stylist made use of them here.

  4. Collecting the water when it’s reaching temperature or from the dehumidifier and watering the plants with it or using in iron – We love this tip from Laraine – these are great ways to use excess water that would otherwise just be going down the plughole. Having plants in your salon is also a great way to purify the air and is much more eco-friendly than artificial decorations.
  5. Using refillable water bottles for client refreshments and products – Laraine has adopted another suggestion from our sustainable salon training for refillable shampoo bottles and she has taken it one step further to include water bottles for client refreshments too. So easy to do.

  6. Having a milkman – Having a milkman enables you to support another small local business whilst also reducing the use for plastic bottles again. Most milk deliveries also have circular systems, meaning you give back the glass bottles you use for them to be used again.
  7. Using leave in conditioner to save the extra rinse – As we’ve mentioned before at Eco Hair and Beauty – using leave in conditioner saves you time and water as there’s no need to rinse the product out. Doing this in salon will also have a considerable positive impact on the environment and your finances.
  8. Recycling salon waste – Our friends at Green Salon Collective are committed to recycling hair materials that are generally difficult to recycle – such as hair colour, foils and hair cuttings. Hair cuttings can be used for textiles, making potting felt and even in architecture! Find out more about Green Salon Collective here.

  9. Not leaving equipment on standby – Whilst items in standby are technically in an energy saving mode, they are still using energy and costing you money. In fact, The Energy Saving Trust estimates that you could save up to £65 a year by switching off devices you’re not using and given the amount of electrical items used in a salon, you could save even more!
  10. Using a magazine app on a kindle – Using a magazine app such as Readly saves on waste and requires a lot less effort from you. The client can choose their preferred digital magazine from the wide variety of titles offered, and there’s no need for you to buy the latest copies or get rid of the old ones, it also reduces waste and makes your salon look tidier.
  11. Using ‘Paper not Foil’ instead of plastic easi mechePaper not Foil create reusable foil made from stone. It is 100% bleach free and off cuts and rejected foil is then made into more foil.
  12. Snap cap training heads – Snap cap training heads are reusable and recyclable, removing the need for multiple standard mannequin heads.
